Dino Polska is the third largest retail chain in Poland and by far the fastest growing one. The company has grown by building out a differentiated value chain (moat) in the areas of the market where the big competitors (Biedronka & Lidl) didn’t want to or simply couldn’t compete. The stores are of a much smaller and standardised format and placed only in rural areas, often in villages with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. This has allowed Dino to cut off its bigger rivals from the rural markets, as those customers don’t have to drive longer distances to towns and cities anymore in a market where consumer decisions are defined more and more by proximity.

This strategy was enabled by Dino buying and owning all the land for its stores and building them through a construction company owned by the Founder (and controlling shareholder), which not only increased the speed of the expansion but also allowed them to operate with minimal financial leverage. This, combined with the rural focus, means that Dino often ends up buying agricultural land, which is cheaper than that in cities. Additionally, the company is vertically integrated as it owns a large meat processing plant, making its prices more competitive, which also allows it to run in-store meat counters (essential in rural Poland), serving as another differentiator. All while the economies of scale have allowed Dino to keep the prices competitive.
